RDA implementation date set !

The official announcement from the Library of Congress declares the official implementation date for RDA to be March 31, 2013.  One short year away!

The U.S. National Agricultural Library and National Library of Medicine, as well as the British Library, Library & Archives Canada, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, and National Library of Australia, will also
target early 2013 for Day One of their RDA implementation.

Many dread the date.  Many feel that it is unnecessary.  Some can hardly wait.  What do YOU think?

Either way, with all of the major libraries choosing to convert to RDA, we smaller libraries will have no choice but to follow in their footsteps.    There are some already choosing RDA and when we download those records we simply cut out the RDA input (with no detrimental affect to our records and no influence on access). With software overlays such as AquaBrowser it seems redundant to implement RDA when many of the goals of utilizing FRBR are covered…  As a cataloguer who strives for consistency, the thought of many different qualities of records in our database is disturbing to say the least.

Cataloging rule interpretations

FYI.  There is a ‘one place to call’ for cataloging rule interpretations.

AACR2rThe site attempts to bring all of the rule interpretations for AACR2 available on the web into a single place. They are designed to be used with a current copy of AACR2. It currently includes all of the latest Rule Interpretations from the Library of Congress, the basic proposals from RDA and how this would impact AACR2.

RDA/LC Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative

RDA vocabularies now published

The JointSteeringCommitteeforDevelopmentofRDA (JSC), the DCMI/RDA Task Group (http://dublincore.org/dcmirdataskgroup/), and ALAPublishing (on behalf of the co-publishers of RDA) are pleased to announce that the first group of RDA controlled vocabularies have been reviewed, approved, and their status in the Open Metadata Registry (OMR) changed to ‘published.’ This status change, from ‘new-proposed’ to ‘published’ signals that the final steps have begun in reviewing the work of the DCMI/RDA Task Group and ensuring that the RDA vocabularies (both elements and controlled vocabularies/concepts) are available in a stable form for the builders of applications. The finished vocabularies can be viewed using the links below.  (The links lead to the description of the vocabulary itself, the specific terms can be viewed under the tab for ‘concepts’).

RDA in marc coding

Many of you wonder how RDA will be implemented in MARC coding.  The Library of Congress MARC Standards Division has listed all approved changes on their website.

My library has not yet embraced RDA.  Has yours?  I would appreciate hearing from any of you who have already implemented RDA.  What are the challenges? Do you like it better than AACR2 ???

RDA preparations?

I subscribe to the RDA-L listserv.  This week the following was posted:

“Some institutions (including the University of Chicago) will switch
all original cataloguing to RDA October 1st, and will continue RDA
cataloguing until the decision concerning implementation is made in
June (or so) 2011.”

My question? How many libraries out there are seriously gearing up for RDA cataloguing?  Are you waiting until June 2011, or are you getting ready now?

If you are preparing for the changeover, what preparations are you making?

For copy cataloguing, do you plan to accept RDA records as is, or edit back to AACR2 for consistency in your catalogue?

Examples of AACR2 to RDA

I came across this document on the RDA-L listserv and thought others would be interested.

ISBD is being updated!

For the more AR cataloguer (and aren’t we all?) below is a link to the 2010 DRAFT

of the Task Force for the ISBD Consolidated Edition

The task force believes that the  International Standard for Bibliographic Description should be revisited  with RDA now a reality.

Changes to RDA source codes

This just in from the Library of Congress Network Development and MARC Standards Office.

Changes to the Source Codes for Vocabularies, Rules, and Schemes.

“In making available changes to MARC to accommodate RDA, the Library of
Congress published lists of terms and codes for RDA content, media, and
carrier types.  Upon further consideration we have determined that the
source codes do not adequately reflect the source material (RDA) as is
usually the case.  Therefore, before the beginning of the RDA tests and
use of these codes, they have been changed to conform to the common
pattern.  The new codes have replaced the ones formerly indicated in the
Source Codes for Vocabularies, Rules, and Schemes list for Genre/Form Term
and Code Sources. See the genre/form source code list for current usage in
MARC fields and MODS/MADS elements.”

The new codes may be used immediately for RDA records.

Genre/Form Term and Code Source Codes
The following source codes have been changed on the Genre/Form Code and
Term Source Codes list
(http://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/genre-form.html).

rdacarrier (formerly marccarrier)
Term and code list for RDA carrier types
(http://www.loc.gov/standards/valuelist/rdacarrier.html)

rdacontent   (formerly marccontent)
Term and code list for RDA content types
(http://www.loc.gov/standards/valuelist/rdacontent.html)

rdamedia   (formerly marcmedia)
Term and code list for RDA media types
(http://www.loc.gov/standards/valuelist/rdamedia.html)

The names of the respective value lists have also been changed to those
indicated above in order to reflect their content (see the listing of
value lists, Value Lists for Codes and Controlled Vocabularies).

The Library of Congress, Network Development and MARC Standards Office
provides information about existing and newly assigned source and value
codes on its web site.
